SOPHIE’S FLOWER SHOP

Sophie and Howl are no stranger to being shuttled between realms, but being stuck in one was a bit of a shock. Not enough of one to keep stalwart Sophie down though, and she soon convinced Howl to open a new shop, although he insisted on naming it after her. Right on Town Square, the flower shop was one they knew how to run at least, although you can also buy spells or magic items if you’re willing to ask.

BIOGRAPHY

The Hatters of Ingary were long thought to be distant relations to those in Wonderland, supported by the fact that they tended to be prone to magic and odd tendencies. Sophie Hatter, while more demure than some when she was younger, was no exception. She talked to herself more than was perfectly normal, using that as entertainment as she embroidered hats. Of course, being turned into an old woman for magic she didn’t even know she had was a new twist, but it was the push she needed to go seek her own fortune. After all, what else did she have to lose?

The wizard Howl was the last one she thought would give her a safe haven of sorts, and even if she couldn’t speak of the curse on her, perhaps being in the same vicinity would be enough to get the wizard to break the curse. Of course, she also didn’t expect him to be quite so infuriating. Cowardly, impulsive, vain, and she really didn’t expect to care for him. Or to care for him enough to risk her own life with the Witch of the Waste. Of course, then he ended up saving her, or maybe she saved him. It all got fuzzy in the end, so the only thing she remembered was that they loved each other and would live happily ever after.

Except as it turned out, happily ever after with Howl was one adventure after another, and she fully blamed him for being pulled into an entirely new world, (while pregnant)*, no less. After all, it had to be his fault somehow, especially as they were dealing with a particularly nasty djinn at the time. It was definitely all his fault, especially after he opened yet another flower shop, this one even named after her.

CONNECTIONS

Annora Ridley: Neither of them are easy women, but Annora has come along quite nicely as an employee and they haven’t had a real argument yet.  It helps they can bond over frustrating men.

David Hatter: Apparently they’re related, or it’s quite likely they are.  She hasn’t approached him yet because she’s not really sure if he’d be able to tell her -- and she isn’t sure if she wants to know.

BIOGRAPHY

Life was generally peaceful and easy for Annora.  Her family wasn’t wealthy enough to have enormous social demands, but they commanded respect in their village and always had a nice home along with plenty of food.  She was skilled in all aspects of managing a home by a kind mother and, though her father wasn’t overly affectionate, he had a kind way about him as well.  She was their only child for reasons she never really questioned, their beloved “Buttercup” by nickname after the flowers she could grow in the garden with no effort to speak of, and their quiet life suited her well.  

When she was just younger than marrying age, her father took a stable boy into his employ.  Westley was quiet and handsome, hardworking, and she began teasing him as a game to see his smile.  He rarely graced her with it for her efforts, but when he did it was as if she was the sun and she could only focus on him.  It took a good long while for the pair to acknowledge their playful manner with one another was born of love, but once they did, they made up their minds to marry.  Her father, being a fair man, set generous terms under which he would agree to allow his Buttercup to marry a man who had begun life as no more than a servant.

The separation was difficult to bear.  News of his death was crushing and impossible.  Rather than wallowing, she closed herself off entirely and promised she would never open herself up to love again.  She became bitter and withdrawn, but it definitely wasn’t wallowing.  Instead, she eventually agreed to marry for the sake of practicality and also because no one else had asked.  The one who’d asked was the prince himself, which would allow her to live out her indifference to the world in general in physical comfort at least.

She never expected to be found again by Westley.  She was equal parts relieved the world had not lost him and deeply hurt he hadn’t come for her once his fortune was established like he promised.  His timing was impeccable, though, and just when she thought perhaps she would escape a marriage and life she wasn’t invested in, they were captured.  The only bargain for his life she could make was hers and she was once again betrothed to a man she was growing to dislike at best.

Annora is far more comfortable in Fableton than she has been anywhere else.  She’s relieved this world doesn’t seem honor-bound to force her into a marriage.  She doesn’t know if Westley ended up here or if he was freed before whatever curse fell, but she knows he’s alive at least and that’s enough for her.  All she needs to do is avoid Humperdinck because of course he’s here.  She wouldn’t trust her fortune if it ever let anything be a perfect new start.

Sophie Jenkins: The two women are very different, but Annora has found something of a friend in her boss. Annora tends to rely on her more than she should for advice about the world they’ve both been thrown into, as well as about Westley.

Tiana Benoit: She often sees the woman in the flower shop, buying flowers for her diner, and respects her for working so hard to open her own business. And maybe sometimes she’s a bit jealous of the fact that Tiana seems to have the ability to do so.
